24th Annual International Coastal Cleanup
A First for Togo!
Last Saturday was the day of the 24th Annual International Coastal Cleanup, an International event organised by the Ocean Conservancy, an organization dedicated to global environmental actions related to the ocean.
Mr Way organised for BSL students to take part. This was a first for BSL and a first for Togo!
Registration had to be closed at forty-five students, forty-one made it on the day, along with six staff members and two more employees.
Students spent the morning on the beach, picking up the litter visible at the high water mark, mostly plastic bags and old fishing ropes.
Back at the school, several especially motivated students helped two teachers go through the litter and record what was there, to send to the Ocean Conservancy to help with their global actions.
Although it might seem pointless to spend time cleaning a beach that will be littered again in a few days, we hope that it will have other, long term benefits. The students who participated in the action might start thinking more about the problem of overflowing plastic and littering, and maybe take action in their daily life and through local activism. Their presence at the beach that day could also have an impact on anyone who saw them and anyone who hears about the event from them.
On Saturday, nearly 400 000 people in 100 countries all over the world volunteered at coastal cleanups. Knowing that on the same day, thousands of people were doing the same thing as them seemed to be a strong motivation for the students, a way of feeling connected to a global community, aimed at making the world a better place.

Therefore, at BSL we are really helping put Togo on the map as well as helping to make a real difference to our world!
