THE CURRICULUM
The curriculum is broadly based, with a balance between academic and aesthetic subjects to give better opportunity for the development of attitudes, concepts, skills and knowledge. The school has developed a schedule of standards in each subject area. These standards are aligned with the Mission Statement to ensure that we achieve what we promise. Each standard is, in turn, broken down into benchmarks that are both assessable and attainable.

Primary years
At The British School of Lomé we use a topic-based approach in the Primary Years to provide a framework for pupils’ learning, drawing together different experiences under a single theme. Our curriculum is broadly based on the British National Curriculum with a heavy emphasis on competency in Mathemathics and English. Information Technology, French, Social Studies, Science, Music, Art, Library Skills and Physical Education are also included in the Reception to Year 6 curriculum.

Secondary years
The Secondary Years Curriculum (Year 7 to Year 11) includes English, English Literature, Mathematics, French, German, Spanish, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Informational Technology, Art, Drama, Music, Personal and Social Education, Business Studies and Physical Education. The curriculum in Years 7 through 9 has been created to allow a smooth transition from Primary through to IGCSE curriculum which begins in Year 10. We use criterion based assessment which allows for differentiated classroom instruction ensuring that all students, including our gifted and talented individuals, are challenged at an appropriate level. Each student is assigned to a form tutor who closely monitors overall achievement in all areas.

Pre-University
Students with an interest in attending University are invited to enter our two-year Pre-university programme (Year 12 and Year 13) , at the heart of which is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. The IB Diploma requires that students take at least six subjects drawn form a number of different academic areas. IB students are also required to complete an Extended Essay at university standards and to participate in CAS (a community, action, service programme). BSL supports CAS by offering the Duke of Edinburgh (Dof E) Award Scheme (also known as the International Award).
The IB Diploma is accepted worldwide as a university entrance examination. This includes the most prestigious universities, such as Cambridge, Harvard, Heidelberg, MIT, Oxford, Rotterdam Erasmus, Sorbonne, Yale and many, many more. We are very good at getting our students into the university of their choice.
External Examinations
The British School of Lomé is a recognised examination centre for the University of London, Cambridge University and the International Baccalaureate Organisation. These examinations are recognised internationally throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Normally Year 11, pupils take at least seven (I)GCSEs and Year 13 students take the IB Diploma examinations and graduate in May of that year. The British School of Lomé is also a recognised SAT Exam Centre.
