EIL / ESL
I have been a teacher for over 20 years. In that time, I have worked in the north east of England, Bulgaria, Botswana, Ukraine, Nigeria and, most recently, Brunei. Although my main subjects are English language and literature, I have also taught drama, media studies, humanities and French. I have worked in a number of national education systems as well as in international schools. My experience covers the whole of the secondary age range, from key stage 3 to 5.
I studied in English Literature and Art History in Manchester. After completing my honours degree, I returned to my native north east of England, where I successfully completed a PGCE in English and Drama at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In 2003, I did an intensive four-week CELTA course, giving me EFL/ESL accreditation. Later, whilst working in Lagos, I studied for a Master’s in Education (Applied Linguistics) with the Open University (UK).
When available and fit, I continue to play football. I also enjoy cycling and playing badminton. Hiking in the countryside is another outdoor activity my family and I adore. Reading novels, magazines and online newspapers is an enjoyable part of my everyday routine. Cinema is another of my interests, especially of the francophone variety. Photography is a long time passion of mine; I hope to continue this in Togo and would like one day to organize an exhibition. Lastly, I am a keen collector of music from various parts of the world and was a d.j. in my younger days.
My family and I are really looking forward to returning to the vibrancy of West Africa. On a professional note, I am both pleased and excited to have gained employment with The British School of Lome as, I believe, it offers me the challenges I need at this stage in my career.
