MODERN LANGUAGES

As the British School of Lomé is situated in a French speaking country, all students in school learn French as a second language from Nursery to Year 13. In most years, we have 2 or 3 ability groups from absolute beginners to French speakers. The curriculum in Primary and the Middle School is focused on communication in every day situations, French at IB Diploma level is more literature based and involves analysis of different styles and eras.
Learning another language opens the student's eyes to other cultures and life styles. As a second foreign language students can choose between Spanish or German from Year 7 to Year 9 and follow it as an option in Yr 10 and Yr 11 to be examined as a GCSE.
In our global environment, it becomes more and more important to be able to communicate in different languages. Our students will have the skills to build international relationships and professional contacts in their future. The sooner a child learns another language, the more playful and the less stressful it is. All teachers make their lessons interactive and lively by using songs, role plays, films, cooking and computer based activities.
