Head of Department: Gary J. McDonald

The aim of the Physical Education department at the British School is to foster a lifelong love of sport in our students. Our motto is 'Building Stronger Lives' which represents the importance of regular and meaningful sport during a students developmental years. The department meets this aim through:

          1. High quality Physical Education lessons delivered to all students in the school
          2. Appropriate and challenging activities which meet the needs and expectations of the students
          3. Access to appropriate equipment and facilities to match the learning taking place
          4. Highly skilled and qualified teachers

At the primary level, students will receive one Physical Education lesson and one swimming lesson per week. At the secondary level, students will receive 2 double periods of Physical Education per week. Students across the school will study in 6 week units drawn from the following list of sports: swimming, rugby, handball, tennis, volleyball, cricket, hockey, football, gymnastics, dance, basketball, athetics, rounders and sofball. Students will meet the same sport twice during each key stage, and their progress will be tracked by the department.

The Department teaches Physical Education to all children and students from Reception to Year 11. Our core program compliments and supports our extensive extra-curricular sports program which focuses on developing our sporting profile both in Togo and in West Africa. We regularly field teams in Football, Basketball and in swimming. Each term, a full compliment of fixtures takes place. We play fixtures against the international schools and other secondary school in Lomé and across West Africa.

The department currently runs the Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education course as an elective for years 10 and 11 students. This is an academic option for student-athletes who are interested in further study in Physical Education and covers units in anatomy, physiology, psychology, coaching and nutrition. Students also have to pass a practical exam of their sporting ability in Year 11.
