PRIMARY YEARS
|
At the British School of Lomé, PYP level teachers are committed to providing students a rich varied curriculum. The programme is designed and delivered using current educational practices and standards of achievement. Students are provided with a variety of theme-based learning opportunities, which are designed around inquiry-based, in-depth comprehensive units of study.
The PYP encourages young learners to master the understanding and consistent use of basic academic facts in order to promote further comprehension and understanding. More importantly, it teaches young children how to think and learn while focusing on details found in broad-based concepts. Additionally, students are learning new skills as they build positive learning attitudes.
The PYP uses inquiry as a base for learning and encourages children to broaden their knowledge and understanding in all subject areas through questioning and research. The programme also promotes the development of personal moral character, through regular reference and integration of the PYP “student profile”.
Students gain knowledge and understanding in order to develop positive qualities which include: risk taking, the use of inquiry, becoming an independent thinker and an open and effective communicator, as well as one who has sound character principals and one who is able to be sensitive, caring and open-minded, while developing into a mature and well-balanced individual.
The PYP attitudes interlaced throughout the curricula include teaching students the importance of appreciation, commitment, self-confidence, co-operation, creativity, curiosity, empathy, enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect and tolerance for others who are different. The PYP also offers appropriate support to special needs learners who demonstrate developmental and learning challenges. |
